Shoeshine, an ordinary Beagle (voiced by Jason Lee), is the victim of an accident in the high-tech laboratory of Dr Simon Barsinister, a mad scientist. Suddenly Shoeshine finds that he has been endowed with extraordinary powers, including human speech, flying and running at superspeed. He becomes his alterego, Underdog, by changing into his superhero costume in a phonebooth (in a brief allusion to Superman). Barsinister, on discovering Underdog’s secret, is desperate to get his hands on the superpooch in order to reproduce the results of the accidental experiment for his own evil purposes. Underdog’s owner/companion is Jack (Alex Neuberger), the son of an ex-cop (Jim Belushi), who helps him discover his true calling as a caped crusader, protecting the citizens of Capitol City. Along the way, he falls in love with Polly Purebred, a King Charles spaniel (voiced by Amy Adams). Romance is briefly put to one side however, when Barsinister attempts to extort $1 billion from Capitol City. Only Underdog can save the day!
